Tension brewed at Delhi-UP border at Ghazipur on Thursday after Ghaziabad administration issued orders to the farmers to vacate the protest site by tonight. The farmers refused to give in and Bharatiya Kisan Union's spokesperson, Rakesh Tikait announced that he is ready to die.
Massive police deployment has been made in the area and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been called in. The administration has cut off power and water supply to the hundreds of farmers, who have been camping out on the roads.
“We will not move from here. We will commit suicide but won’t end protest until the farm bills are repealed,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government ordered all its DMs and SSPs to ensure the end of all farmers’ protests in the state. In several protest sites of Uttar Pradesh, farmers have been told to go. On Wednesday night, the Baghpat administration got a protest site vacated in the district, but denied using force.
The other two key borders— Tikri and Singhu— have been placed under heavy security. The police have dug up roads, using JCB machines.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police has issued lookout notice against several farmer leaders who have been named in the FIRs filed in connection with the violence on January 26. They will also be asked to surrender their passports. The police have named 37 farmer leaders, including Rakesh Tikait, Yogendra Yadav and Medha Patkar, in the FIR that mentioned charges of attempt to murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy.
16 Opposition parties said on Thursday, that they would boycott the President’s address to Parliament on January 29, ahead of the commencement of the Budget session.
The Noida Police has registered an FIR against eight people including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, journalists Rajdeep Sardesai, Mrinal Pandey and Zafar Agha for spreading violence on Republic Day through social media posts on farmers’ protests.
