A "low-intensity" IED (improvised explosive device) was detonated near the Israeli embassy in Central Delhi at around 5pm on Friday. No injuries or property damage, apart from shattered windscreens of nearby cars, had been reported. The blast occurred just 1.4 km away from the Vijaya Chowk, where President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior government members had gathered for the Beating Retreat function.
Delhi Police said that the explosion took place at the roadside of 5 Aurangzeb Road. Fire brigade, SWAT and forensic teams rushed to the spot soon after the incident that took place.
"We are looking into the matter. Multiple police teams have been rushed to the spot. It is yet to be ascertained the kind of material that exploded," said a senior police officer.
According to sources, the improvised device was found in a flower pot on road divider near Jindal House, Delhi. It appears that it was thrown from a moving vehicle.
As part of the SOP (standard operating procedure) in such situations, an alert has been issued at all airports, important installations and government buildings in the country, and "enhanced security measures have been put in place", the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force), which guards civil airports, nuclear and aerospace installations, the Delhi Metro and central government buildings, said.
Heavy police and special forces deployment can be seen near the blast area. The blast comes on a day when India and Israel marked the 29th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
The Indian government is yet to release an official statement on this incident. Israel said an investigation was under way but one Israeli official told news agencies it was being regarded as a "terrorist incident".
