About 87 people were reportedly injured as police resorted to lathicharge and used water cannon and tear-gas shells at terminated school teachers protesting outside Agartala City Centre for the past 52 days demanding permanent jobs.
On the night of 26 January, protesting teachers took out a candle march in Agartala and had planned to march up to the State Secretariat.
Apprehending the outbreak of violence and danger to public life and property, on Tuesday, the West Tripura District Magistrate imposed Section 144 in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area for 24 hours starting 6 am Wednesday.
The DM said that the police detained around 223 teachers and took them to a detention centre. He also informed that police tried to prevent them but they did not stop from marching forward which forced the police to use water cannons, tear gas and lathi-charge them. Two cases have been registered against the terminated teachers for resorting to violence in the name of a day-long movement.
He further said that the teachers vandalized four vehicles including the additional superintendents during the clash with police. They also vandalized a bus, as a result, the police had to take strict action.
"A total of 87 people were injured while trying to stop the movement of terminated teachers. Among them, 70 are teachers and 17 police personnel. Out of those 17 police personnel, six are female police personnel," he said.
A total of 10,323 teachers — including teachers of graduate, undergraduate and postgraduate courses — who were inducted since 2010 were terminated from service after the Tripura High Court scrapped their appointments in 2014 due to irregularities in the recruitment process.
In 2017, the Supreme Court held the high court's decision right, in response to petitions filed by the teachers and the State government. Although around 8,000 teachers were reappointed on an ad-hoc basis, their tenure came to an end in March 2020, rendering them unemployed again. In the wake of their unemployment, the teachers formed three organisations – Justice for 10323, Amra 10323 and All Tripura Ad Hoc Teachers’ Association.
In September 2020, Tripura’s cabinet allowed 9,686 out of 10,323 sacked teachers to apply for around 9,700 vacant positions under non-technical Group-C positions. The sacked teachers were also given an age relaxation till 31 March 2023. Subsequently, in November 2020 the Tripura government had announced that it would appoint around 3,970 teachers across all levels in government schools.
