At least 4 workers died on Wednesday morning and a 6 others fell ill after being exposed to some toxic gas leaked from a unit at Rourkela Steel Plant, a subsidiary of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in Odisha.
The incident took place at the Coal Chemical Department of the plant when a total of 10 workers were on duty.
The four workers who died, were contractual workers engaged by a private company. "According to a preliminary report, they died due to emission of carbon monoxide gas from the unit," the officials said.
They were admitted to Ispat General Hospital where they died and a few others are being treated in the steel plant's dispensary.
The plant authorities have ordered a high-level probe into the mishap, officials said. RSP CEO said that the company would extend every possible support to the workers families.
The Plant placed two Deputy General Managers of the Coal Chemicals Department and Energy Management Department under suspension for dereliction in duty. One member each of the deceased would be offered compensate employment in the plant, the company said.
Himansu Sekhar Bal, a worker union leader, alleged, “Accidents occurred in the past due to lapses in safety measures. With regards to Wednesday’s incident, fire service and ambulance vehicles would have to be mandatorily stationed prior to taking up any repair work. However, these vehicles were rushed to spot after occurrence of the accident.”
