West Bengal's Mamata government has launched ‘Chokher Alo’, a scheme that will ensure cataract operations for senior citizens and eye treatment for free.
The scheme aims to provide free eye-care, including cataract surgery, spectacles and eye check-up, to all.
"The government has set a target to operate for cataract of 20 lakh senior citizens. The government will also provide free spectacles to 8.25 lakh aged people who will go undergo operation," said CM Mamata Banerjee.
The State government will provide free eye tests to all students in government schools and around 4 lakh students would be provided with free spectacles. Children visiting anganwadi centres can also get free eye check-up, to detect eye problems at an early age. Not only students but anganwadi workers too will get the opportunity to have their testing done free.
More than 300 eye surgeons and around 400 optometrists would be working on the scheme.
"In the first phase starting Tuesday, camps would be held in around 1,200 villages and around 120 primary health centres in cities and towns in the state. Later all villages, towns and cities would be brought under the project,” said Bannerjee.
The TMC-led government in the state is coming up with lots of different schemes as the Bengal elections are near.
