Pro-Trump protesters, upset at the outcome of the presidential election, stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday as Congress met to tally the electoral votes that certify Joe Biden’s victory as the president-elect.
The protestors turned violent at about noon, after Trump took the stage to roaring crowds, falsely claiming he had won the election.
Hundreds of the protestors breached the security and entered the Capitol building, causing members of Congress to flee the House and Senate chambers to be safely locked down in their offices while some were evacuated elsewhere. Some made it into House Speaker's office. The Speaker had been evacuated from the area and was safe. A woman was fatally shot inside the US Capitol after the mob breached the building.
In a televised speech, Biden condemned Trump for stoking the violence saying,"I call on this mob to pull back and allow the work of democracy to go forward".
The city mayor has put Washington DC under 15-day curfew. The FBI said it had disarmed two suspected explosive devices and officials declared Capitol ‘secure’ nearly 4 hours after the attack.
Twitter blocked Trump's account for 12 hours. Facebook and Instagram blocked his account for 24 hours. This was done to restrict Trump's false claims.
