United Kingdom's Home Secretary Priti Patel on Friday approved the extradition of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi to India, where he will face trial, ANI reported.
Modi is accused of duping the Punjab National Bank of more than ₹13,000 crore. He was arrested on March 19, 2019, and has been lodged in London’s Wandsworth jail.
On February 25, the Westminster Magistrates' Court had ordered that Modi can be extradited to India and it is in compliance with human rights.
Modi is subject to two separate sets of criminal proceedings, one a CBI case relating to a large-scale fraud upon PNB, and another, an ED case relating to the laundering of the profits of that fraud. He also faces two additional charges of 'causing the disappearance of evidence' and intimidating witnesses, or criminal intimidation to cause death added to the CBI case.
Nirav Modi now has 14 days to make an application for leave to appeal to the High Court. He may seek leave to appeal against both the decisions of the District Judge and of the Home Secretary, Hindustan Times reported.
