Delhi government has imposed a complete lockdown in Delhi for six days, starting from Monday night (April 19) till next Monday morning (April 26), in the wake of a record rise in COVID-19 cases.
After a meeting with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, CM Arvind Kejriwal took to addressing residents of Delhi on Monday and announced a strict lockdown in the city which recorded over 25,000 Covid-19 cases on Sunday.
CM Arvind Kejriwal said that Delhi's health system is strained with the daily 25,000 cases that the city is witnessing now.
"Delhi's health system has reached its limits. I don't say that the system has collapsed but it has reached its limits," Kejriwal said in a press briefing. The chief minister reiterated that Delhi was facing fourth wave of the pandemic, remarking that the city's health system has reached its limits. "I won't say that the health system has collapsed but it has reached its limits," he said.
Kejriwal announced on Monday, "There will be a small lockdown in Delhi from 10 pm tonight. Essential services will continue. Marriage ceremonies will be allowed with a gathering of only 50 people." Sources have said all private offices will have to work from home during the lockdown period in Delhi and only essential services and government establishments will function from office.
Appealing to migrant workers, he said, "I'm appealing you with folded hands, it's just a short, six-day lockdown. Don't leave Delhi and go. I'm very hopeful that we won't need to extend the lockdown anymore. The Delhi government will take care of you."
Government officials, judicial staff, medical personnel, media, students appearing for exams, etc. will be exempted with ID cards.
There will be no restriction on inter-state travel or transport of essential goods. Public transport will be allowed but only with limited seating capacity. All essential services will continue.
Religious places will be open but visitors won't be allowed. Only 50 people allowed at weddings and only 20 people at funerals. Private offices, educational institutions, malls, gyms, parks, spa, salons, pools will be closed. All kinds of social gatherings will be prohibited.
Kejriwal had on April 15 announced sweeping restrictions in Delhi, including a weekend curfew and the closure of malls, gymnasiums, spas, and auditoriums, in a bid to break the chain of the COVID-19 infection in the national capital.
