A massive earthquake of 6.4 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Assam on Wednesday. The National Centre for Seismology said that the epicentre of the quake was Sonitpur district. No casualty has been reported so far.
The first earthquake was recorded at 7:51 am at a depth of 17 km. There were seven aftershocks following the first major earthquake. The seven aftershocks of magnitude 3.2 to 4.7 were recorded over the next 2 hours 30 minutes in the vicinity of Sonitpur in Assam.
Several parts of the state have reported cracks in the earth. A road in Sonitpur that was the epicentre of the earthquake has developed a crack following the impact of the earthquake while several buildings and walls in the area suffered damages.
"Damages to buildings also reported within 100 km from epicentre in areas of Sonitpur, Nagaon, Guwahati as received from Central Seismological Observatory, NCS, Shillong and Regional Meteorological Centre IMD, Guwahati," the National Centre for Seismology’s report stated.
Videos emerging from Assam show walls have collapsed, windows were shattered in some areas due to the impact of the earthquake. Cracks have been spotted in some buildings in Assam. There are no reports of casualties or injuries so far.
Earlier this month, an earthquake of magnitude 2.7 hit Tinsukia in Assam on April 6. A day before that, another earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Sikkim-Nepal border. The earthquake tremors were felt in parts of Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
