West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee alleged that she was attacked today while in Nandigram, where she had gone to file her nomination for the coming elections. The CM said that she was pushed by four or five people at a time when there was no police personnel around her. Visuals from the spot showed security guards lifting and placing her on the backseat of a car.
The incident took place around 6.15 pm when the chief minister was about to leave Birulia area near Reyapara after praying at a local temple. The Chief Minister told reporters that she was pushed by four or five men while she was trying to get into her car. Pointing to her leg, she added, "See how it is swelling up". Asked if it was a planned attack, she said, "Of course it is a conspiracy… there were no policemen around me". She said that her leg got swollen because of the injury and she was feeling feverish, besides having chest pain.
However, some local eyewitnesses denied Mamata's claims. "People gathered to see her. When she was about to leave, there were people around there. But nobody pushed her...She was sitting inside the moving car and the door was open. The door closed after it touched a poster. Nobody pushed and hit her. There was no one near the door," an eyewitness said.
Banerjee, who was supposed to stay the night in Nandigram in the Purba Medinipur district, was rushed back to Kolkata and hospitalised in SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for treatment.
Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas and Abhishek Banerjee went to see her at the hospital. West Bengal's Governor Jagdeep Dharkar also visited the hospital to see her. However, he was received with go back slogans from TMC supporters, some even showed slippers at the him.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought a detailed report from West Bengal chief secretary and its special observers in the state Ajay Nayak and Vivek Dubey. The reports have been sought latest by 5 pm on Friday. "We have sought a report from the state police administration. The report must be sent quickly," an EC official said.
The BJP alleged that Banerjee was trying to turn a “simple accident” into a “pre-planned conspiracy”, and demanded a CBI investigation. Congress called the event a move to gain sympathy before the polls in Bengal.
