A 50-year-old farmer in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh hanged himself after allegedly being slapped by Electricity Department officials and served an 'inflated' power bill. The family of the deceased claimed that their dues of Rs 1,500 had been mistakenly shown as Rs 1,50,000 in the bill.
The incident took place at Sunaira village in Atrauli tehsil on Saturday when the Electricity Department officials turned up at Ramji Lal's house and handed over a power bill of Rs 1,50,000. For the last several days, he had been running from pillar to post to get it rectified but in vain. Two officials of the electricity department showed up at Lal’s house to recover the dues. When he informed them that he didn’t have money to clear the inflated bill, the officials allegedly slapped him in the presence of his family members. Following this, Lal committed suicide by hanging himself.
In protests against the incident, people placed the body in front of the local Electricity Department office and refused to cremate the body until an FIR was filled against the SDO and junior engineer, who allegedly had gone to the victim's house.
The victim's family lodged a complaint at the Barla police station stating that the amount of Rs 1,500 had erroneously been shown as Rs 1,50,000 in the electricity bill.
Atrauli SDM Pankaj Kumar told reporters on Sunday that necessary action will be taken against those found guilty and a case will also be filed against them.
