The BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government is facing major political and social outrage on videos showing the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) employees forcibly evicting homeless elderly people out of the city and dropping them near a village in the biting cold.
A series of videos show how IMC employees forcibly drove homeless elderly people out of the city, and dropped them near a village called Kishpra. They were seen throwing away the belongings of elderly homeless after dropping them on the highway. Another video shows local residents opposing the move of the IMC staffers.
The alleged reason behind this incident in the cleanest city of the country is that these elders were spoiling the cleanliness of the city. Many of them spend their lives begging on the streets. They were staining the city's cleanliness, which is why the IMC decided to leave them out of the city.
Later, the Deputy Municipal Commissioner Pratap Solanki was suspended and two more contractual employees were sacked.
Congress, the main opposition in the state, is opposing the move of the IMC. In a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that this is “shameful and a blot on humanity”. She said that the government and the local administration should apologise to the elderly, and instead of taking action against the employees following orders, action must be initiated against those who gave the orders. Former CM Kamal Nath rued the national shame brought to the State by the incident.
