A week ago, hundreds of contractual employees vandalised the manufacturing unit of Apple supplier Wistron in Kolar, Karnataka. The company now has said that it has fired the vice-president of its India operations and accepted that it had failed in payments to its staff.
On Saturday, Apple Inc said that it would not give Wistron new business until it took corrective actions in this case.
The labour office said Wistron did not maintain proper employment and appointment details of their workers and staff who worked in 12-hour shifts at the Kolar plant were not paid for overtime. It did not keep up salary and attendance records as required by law.
The contract staff were unhappy about non-payment of wages for extra work hours. This had led to the violence at the plant and a loss of ₹43 crore to the company.
