Attorney General KK Venugopal on Thursday gave his consent to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his allegedly objectionable tweets against the Supreme Court.
On Wednesday, Kamra had shared a series of tweets concerning the Court in his reaction to interim bail granted to Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami by the SC in the 2018 abetment to suicide case.
The base for this contempt request were 4 tweets and morphed pic in which the SC was in saffron colour with a BJP's flag hoisted.
On the morphed pic, the AG stated that it is a gross insinuation against the entirety of the SC that the it is not an independent and impartial institution...
AG stated that the tweets by Kamra were "not only in bad taste but clearly cross the line between humor and contempt of the court."
