The Bay of Bengal will see its second Severe Cyclone of the year. Cyclone Nivar is expected to hit the Tamil Nadu coast in the next three days. Tamil Nadu will see heavy rains, strong winds, with highly rough sea conditions. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are on red alert. Puducherry announced implementation of Section 144 from 9 pm on Tuesday to 6 am on Thursday during which shops and commercial establishments will remain closed. Water and electricity supply are likely to be affected in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The cyclone was located 410 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 450 km southeast of Chennai. The wind speed will range between 70-80 km/hr gusting to 90 km/hr.
NDRF has rushed 12 teams across Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry and pre-positioned them as part of its precautionary measures, while three teams are kept on stand-by at its base in Arakkonam near Chennai. Helplines have been set up and IMD has suggested complete suspension of fishing activity in the Bay of Bengal till Nov 25.
